According to distributor Paramount, it took in a str0ng $15 million Friday from 4,111 theaters (-62% from its opening) for what should be a $50 million weekend. Its new cume is a monster $141.4M. But the big story this weekend is what a big bomb Warner Bros' has released. It's now official: Speed Racer is the first domestic box office disaster of the summer (although the PG pic should do better overseas). It placed only No. 3 Friday, well behind Fox's romantic comedy What Happens In Vegas, which opened with $7.1 million from 3,215 venues for what should be a $20 million weekend.
But back to Speed Racer: despite a wide release into 3,606 theaters, the anime actioner opened Friday with only $6.1 million (and some studios said it was merely $5.7M). Even if today's kiddie matinees generate some of the usual high-octane and the movie moves up a notch to second place, it still won't move Speed Racer out of the slow lane or approach Warner Bros' own expectations of a mid-$30s million debut (and that was down from a hoped-for $40 mil a few days before...). The alarming fact is this film will struggle to even make $20 million for the weekend. At an estimated cost of at least $140 million (some sources put the final budget as high as $185 million), this family fare is yet another case of a studio letting talent run amok: the Wachowski siblings of Matrix fame delivered a long, loud, and lousy movie that the Warner Bros bosses were contractually powerless to fix.

This episode takes place precisely after the season three finale, and it also involves a flash-forward rather than the regular flashback. An adaptation of Bryan Burrough's book "Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43," the Universal Pictures project follows the government's attempt to stop the criminals John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. Depp is playing Dillinger.
Bale would play Melvin Purvis, who led the FBI's manhunt for Dillinger and captured more public enemies than any other agent in FBI history.
It was Purvis who uttered, "Stick 'em up, Johnny" when he confronted Dillinger outside Chicago's Biograph Theatre in 1934, moments before the gangster was shot dead by FBI agents. Ben Johnson played Purvis in the 1973 movie "Dillinger."
Production is due to start later this winter in Chicago and other Midwest locales. The job is not expected to conflict with Bale's commitment to play John Connor in the fourth "Terminator movie, "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins," which will follow "Enemies."
Bale will next be seen in this summer's Batman movie, "The Dark Knight."

Katie Holmes was all over the internet this weekend. She took 20 month old Suri on a shopping spree to stores very appropriate for toddlers—like Fred Segal on Melrose and other Beverly Hills stops.
Uh, not! At one point, spying cameras from the various paparazzi show Suri being carried by one of Tom Cruise's security men while Katie shopped. Later the camera crews and paparazzi got amazingly vivid and unobstructed film of little Suri.
This can't be the way to raise a toddler, can it? Frankly, it seems contrived, like a headlined adventure for Katie and baby to show they're bonding and happy at Christmas, just a couple of weeks before Katie's movie, "Mad Money," opens nationwide.
I can't remember a baby this much on display. Cruise's elder kids were rarely seen before they hit age 10. Indeed, most Hollywood children are usually hidden from view for fear of kidnapping or other threats.Even with a security SWAT team, Holmes would be better off doing her adult errands without Suri. There's no doubt the baby would probably be happier, even if it her absence disappoints the photogs.

The 45-year-old actress can be seen in some shots shampooing her hair while in the shower.
The junk removal firm were represented by Phoenix-based agent David Hans Schmidt, who was famous for brokering deals involving compromising, and often highly personal, photos and videos of celebrities.

Mirren, who played The Queen on the big screen, insists the pair both gained popularity and icon status by fooling the world into thinking they were dumb blondes.
